Mt Myoko

STORY

Mt. Myoko (top 100 mountains of Japan) in the Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park has long been considered a sacred mountain where spirits and gods live, as well as a place of worship and for “Shugendo” religious training. Participants of this tour will retrace the paths taken by pilgrims of Mt. Myoko since ancient times, starting from Sekiyama Shrine, a place of worship for Mt. Myoko that has long been used by the residents of its neighbourhoods. On Day 1 the scene will be set with a tour introduction from a local guide recounting tales of the history of the shrine and of mountain worship. You will then follow a beautiful tree-lined route to the Tsubame Onsen area with a local, professional mountaineering guide. On Day 2, the guide will take participants to the peak of Mt. Myoko, via the waterfalls, ponds, small shrines, and rocks that have been considered sacred since ancient times. Retrace the footsteps of local ancestors as you ascend the rugged trails of this great sacred mountain and admire the fabulous variety of views and panoramas.

HIGHLIGHTS DAY 1

► Enjoy the knowledgeable explanations of a friendly local guide.
► Enter the main shrine building, which is normally closed to the public, and view the treasures and relics of the mountain of worship.
► Stamp of Sekiyama Shrine seal (go-shu-in).
►Receive copies of papers dating back from the Edo era (16th-18th) showing a map of the ancient pilgrimage route, and the permit allowing pilgrims to make the climb.
►Night in an hot-spring onsen area to refresh and relax.

HIGHLIGHTS DAY 2

► The trails are steep and full of challenges. Even as a day hike, this is a true mountain climb.
► See the waterfalls, ponds, small shrines, and large rocks that have attracted the faithful to this route since ancient times.
