On the 29thand 30thof May a group of volunteers from Myoko gathered to help transport supplies to Koya Ike Hut near the peak of Mt Hiuchi. The hut is a popular place for climbers to stay overnight while climbing Mt Hiuchi & Mt Myoko. Supplies are airlifted from Sasagamine to the hut via helicopter and then hurriedly unpacked by the volunteers before the next package arrives. Usually all the supplies can be transported in a few hours. However, this year due to bad weather and high wind it took 2 days to complete the runs.
As someone who regularly climbs Mt Hiuchi each year it was amazing to see that the hut which takes 3-4 hrs to reach by foot can be reached in only 5 minutes by the helicopter.
There is still around 2 meters of snow on the mountain and the main climbing season is still a couple of months away. However, some of the more hardcore climbers have started to climb Mt Hiuchi already.
If you are interested in staying in the hut you can contact us for more info and to arrange a booking.
