Sasagamine Skunk Cabbages

Skunk Cabbages in Sasagamine Woodland

Sasagamine in Myoko Kogen is a stunningly beautiful area of natural beauty. Located at 1300m above sea level deep in the Myoko mountain range it is far from any village and is an excellent place to escape to. During spring the Sasagamine skunk cabbages bloom in areas deep in the forest. The area is easily accessible by foot. A loop around the area will take you about 1.5 – 2hrs depending on your pace. Good footwear is advisable as you are walking through a forest area and in this season, there is still a little snow you must walk over and there are plenty of muddy areas.

The hiking trail is lined with skunk cabbages all the way around. There are also plenty of other wild flowers that are now blooming. The highlight of the walk is an area called Yumemidaira which is a large open area filled with skunk cabbages with a beautiful mountain back drop. As well as the new flowers, there is also plenty of wild life, especially frogs which can be found near the watery areas. If you wish to see the skunk cabbages, they are now in full bloom and will probably be good until the end of next week. There are many different hiking trails to explore in Sasagamine. The area changes with the seasons. It is a stunning area to visit all year round.
