Jan 13 Fire Festival – Madarao Mountain Resort

An annual event held in early January every year. Burning of the “Dondo Yaki” is a powerful symbol. It has been said that if you can withstand this fire, your body will be strong, and if you eat rice cake cooked on the fire your body will withstand sickness. Gather at the main tent at Madarao Kogen Hotel beside Madarao Ski Area main entrance, there is a free service of sweet sake and oranges.

14: 00 – 15: 00 Kakizome: Write your wishes in Indian ink.

Venue / Madarao Kogen Hotel Restaurant Shirakaba. Fee / 500 yen per sheet/wish

20: 30 – Free service of sweet sake and oranges
21: 00 – Ski slope fireworks
21: 05 – Torch bearers
21: 30 – Fire is lit

 

Jan 15 Fire Festival – Akakura Onsen

Dondo Yaki an annual fire festival held at Akakura Onsen.

The burning of New Year’s decorations and wishing for our health and safety for the new year.

It will start at 7:30.

 

Jan 20 Dynamite Carnival – Suginohara Ski Resort

There will be night skiing available on this day from 18:00 – 19:45 (Romance No1 & 2 lifts) for 1,600 yen.

A free shuttle bus will be available from Akakura Onsen, Shin Akakura & Ikenotaira to the ski resort. Please check with your hotel/tourist office nearer the time for the bus schedule.

17:30 Food courts will open – You can try many kinds of delicious local food

19:00 dondo Yaki. The traditional ancient fire that will protect you from sickness throughout the year is lit.

19:30 Torch bearers carrying flame ski down from the mountain.

20:00 Fireworks display & lottery. You can win various prizes including a ski resort day pass.
